Garlic and ginger graters are highly sought-after ceramic products, but I wanted to fasten the production process. To construct a simple tool, I rushed to my kids’ toy box.

You’ll only need five LEGO® Technic pieces: two liftarms with holes in them, two pins (part 2780 and part 6558), and a gear (like part 6589). A wider gear worked better than a thinner one, due to the grater still working efficiently with the added upside that no excess garlic would get stuck on the grater when you clean it off with a kitchen brush after use.

1 To assemble the tool, connect the liftarms with the longer pin (part 6558) and place the gear on it. Now, just push the shorter pin (part 2780) into the opposite hole of the liftarms for stabilization.

2 The gear must turn easily with a light touch.

3 Hold the tool in the center of your freshly thrown dish and slowly move it with light pressure from the center to the outside while spinning your wheel slowly.

After throwing a small dish with 200 grams (less than half a pound) of clay, you can decorate it with colored slip right on the wheel. Hold the tool in the center of your freshly thrown dish and slowly move it with light pressure from the center to the outside while spinning your wheel slowly (3). It’s a quick and easy process. Have fun!
