When deciding which handle, spout, lid, or other adornments to add to my vessels, instead of making multiple options to try out only to have to toss them when they don’t work toward the desired result, I use a plastic bin and a dry-erase marker to doodle ideas. This allows me to freely sketch over my pottery without the fuss of attaching, removing, and remake said additions.

1 Using a dry-erase marker, draw onto the clear bin, sketching out ideas such as handles. 2 Using a dry-erase marker, draw onto the clear bin, sketching out ideas such as spouts.

You’ll need these three simple items found in most homes: a clear plastic bin that can easily fit over your pottery, a dry-erase marker, and the pottery you would like to work with.

3 Using a dry-erase marker, draw onto the clear bin, sketching out ideas such as lids.

Start by placing your pottery onto a secure surface, such as a banding wheel. Then, place your clear plastic bin over your pottery. Using a dry-erase marker, draw right onto the clear bin, sketching out ideas such as handles (1), spouts (2), lids (3), and other fun and creative appendages until you find one you would like to use. Erase as needed and redraw until you find the perfect fit. I hope this helps save you time and decision-making stress, while also bringing creative play into the process.
