Red hues, like those found in Misty Gamble’s Partridge Plymouth Rock, can be natural, elusive, or shocking depending on their use, tone, or atmosphere. Below are a handful of reds to try in your next firing.

1 Richard W. James’ sculpture at the leather-hard stage, KU Red earthenware. 2 Mark Cortright’s teapot, Kilauea Red glaze.

3 Janina Myronova’s Play with Me, stoneware, Engobe mixed with red and yellow stains, fired to 2282°F (1250°C). 4 Andrea Moon’s Red Platter (detail), 17 in. (43 cm) in length, black stoneware, Sensei Red glaze, fired in an electric kiln, 2015.
