Sara Ballek was born and raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where she earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics. After graduating, she continued to head south to Asheville, North Carolina. She continues to make work as a Resident Artist at Odyssey ClayWorks in the River Arts District of Asheville.
