T-Bone engobe can be seen in all areas that are not covered by the orange glaze. Various Mason stains were used to color the engobe. This engobe is very stable when dry because of the borax. The engobe provides a surface that vinyl will adhere to. It can also accept another layer of engobe applied on top of the fired surface for another firing (both with a little help from a heat gun).
Spray the engobe on to create an even layer or brush the engobe for a chunky layer. The engobe can be applied at any stage, though Matt Ziemke prefers to apply the first layer at the leather-hard stage and adds subsequent coats on bisque ware or after firing to cone 04. For a little extra gloss on the final piece, apply a thin layer of clear glaze.
