Instructions
For dipping pots, I use this slip at a density of 1.44–1.47. The greenware must be a stiff leather hard so as not to become misshapen once coated in the slip. If it is too stiff, the slip will crackle. Experimentation is required to find the sweet spot. When brushing the slip on, I don’t measure the density but use it like a thick pudding. To color slip, the addition of 10% stain is the basic rule of thumb. This is about right in most cases using Mason stains. When adding metal colorants, use much less. I use 4.5% copper carbonate for green and 3% black iron oxide for brown. You only need 0.5–2% cobalt oxide for blue.
Note: If you’d prefer these recipes written as empirical formulas, you can do that calculation yourself or see the formulas written that way on the Ceramic Arts Network video Flat to Functional available at https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/shop/flat-to-functional-with-lisa-naples.
