The combination of Malcolm’s Shino and Reitz Green I believe works best on darker stoneware bodies. (I use Laguna 900.) Reduce heavily starting at cone 012 for an hour making sure that the kiln temperature continues to rise through the hour. A heavy reduction can create conditions for heavy soot production in the atmosphere, increasing the likelihood for beautiful carbon-trapping effects on the shino, which I’m going for. In my downdraft kiln, I damper in aggressively, increase gas pressure, and decrease the amount of air in the flame to cause the heavy, soot-producing reduction. Malcolm’s Shino should always be the base glaze when you layer with Reitz Green. The rhymes “shino first or be cursed,” or "shino under or it’s a blunder” are great reminders. Apply the shino on the thicker side. This is one of my go-to combinations for layering with wax resist using my sponge stamps.
