Instructions

I used this recipe to make kiln furniture in 1980 and have relied on the same stilts, spacers, etc. in all my kilns since then with great success. For stilts that are up to 4 inches tall, I extruded a tube 1 1/4 inch in diameter. For stilts that are 5–7 inches tall, I made the tube 2 1/4 inches in diameter. After the extrusions are almost bone dry, you can make a nice, square cut using a chop saw with an old blade. When cutting the stilts, Be sure to work outside, have a fan running to disperse the dust, and wear a properly fitted respirator.

Fire the stilts before using, since they will shrink slightly when first fired. I fire mine to cone 9 before use. They can be used in bisque firings and glaze firings.
