Satin to gloss Cone 5 oxidation or reduction glaze that reacts well to colorants. Julia Galloway uses this glaze both as a clear glaze and with a variety of metallic oxide colorants and stains to get strong colors.
Mix all dry ingredients together prior to adding the water. This recipe contains Gerstley borate, which tends to gel over time. Mix small quantities of this glaze at a time to avoid gelling and related application problems like excessively thick coatings and drying cracks. If you have issues with the bentonite forming clumps, soak it in water overnight before adding to the rest of the ingredients. Alternately, if you've mixed it in to the dry mix already and have clumps after adding water, after mixing, sieve the glaze through at least an 80-mesh screen to remove lumps and disperse any colorants evenly. To get strong colors, in general, add 5-10% commercial stains with an additional 2-4% metallic oxides to get different colors.
