The ashes are screened to remove any wood or charcoal, etc. They are then mixed with water and allowed to settle. The water is decanted and new water added and mixed in. This process is repeated 3 or 4 times until the water no longer feels soapy. The wet ashes are scooped into a large basin lined with a cloth to help wick away the water, and left to dry.
