Artist Statement:
I use slab building to make enclosed forms inspired by the shapes we do not see—mathematical forms, spaces in the soil, and hidden stories. I use clay because it is under the ground everywhere, as universal as music and math.

Studio Description:
I have a small kiln, a wheel, and a medium-sized garage from which I teach and make my ceramic sculptures. I try to throw a pot a day, sometimes using clay dug from a nearby Roman kiln site.

What type of clay do you use?
Home-mixed porcealin, stoneware (Earthstone 5), local clays

What temperature do you fire to?
High fire 1240°

What is your primary forming method?
Slab building, press molding

What is your favorite surface treatment?
I like the shards in my sculpture cornerstones

Do you make any of your own tools?
I use tools made from household and found objects

What one word would you use to describe your work?
Integrity

What is your favorite thing about your studio?
Its a peaceful place

What is the one thing in your studio you can’t live without?
My industrial wheel from the 1970s

What are your top three studio wishes?
Less clutter, more buckets, heating

How do you save money on materials and supplies?

Always recycle all the clay scraps immediately

How do you recharge creatively?
Walking with my dog

Do you have any DIY tips for studio efficiency?
Clean floor throughout the day - it keeps down dust and means the cleaning is less

What challenges have you given yourself to overcome?
Selling pots overseas from the UK

Awful to the outside world, amazing to me
