Artist Statement:
As this civilization & its cradle of origin spiral due to conflicts, my interest in the modest material of clay & its origins of usage become ever more meaningful to me. As workers in clay we should be proud we come from a fierce and pivotal material.

Studio Description: 
Let there be light! Modest conditions is a great challenge: hands + clay + source of firing= inspiring.

What type of clay do you use?
Usually earthenwares. But any will do.

What temperature do you fire to?
1900 degrees F. (usually).

What is your primary forming method?
Hand building. Wheel is great tool to add to that.

What is your favorite surface treatment?
Luv a matt surface. And color. Simplicity.

Do you make any of your own tools?
Have done. And will if necessary. But I like the idea of finding a bolt or a stick or a kitchen devise that can do the job!

What one word would you use to describe your work?
Architectonic.

What is your favorite thing about your studio?
Friendly.

What is the one thing in your studio you can’t live without?
LIGHT & warmth & music.

What are your top three studio wishes?
Inspiration. Efficiency. Contentedness.

What’s on your current reading list?
The Red Tent. A Gentleman in Moscow. In Exremis- War Correspondent Marie Colvin

How do you save money on materials and supplies?
Recycle. Prioritize needs. Determine 1 or 2 aesthetics / narrow & intensify focus.

How do you recharge creatively?
Periodicals / travel / gallery going/ lots of great coffee haunts!

Do you have any DIY tips for studio efficiency?
Re-bag all clay bits as I am moving along. Wet them & re-wedge. Periodic stops to clean up my table space! At end of each day, organize for next day!

What challenges have you given yourself to overcome?
As my mentor Marilyn Levine said when asked about success, "just keep on working".

What did you first piece look like?
A leather-look-alike surface , clay goblet. It was ok!

What ceramic superpower would you have and why?
Energy to burn ! Inspiration that is endless. Ability to never doubt.

Who is your ceramic art mentor and why?
Architects who have looked to small scale form and sized it up ( ex: Frank Geary).

What is your studio playlist?
Jazz (experimental & standards) & latino jazz.

Why do you create art?
Problem solving is hugely satisfying. Organizing parts to make a whole is hugely satisfying. Great community!

What is your best studio tip?
Clear the clutter! (doesn't work if you can't see the forest for the trees.)

If you could change one property of clay, what would it be?
Drastic flexibility to not alter/slump/crack after forming.
