Artist Statement:

My sculptures reflect my interest in the physical and psychological spaces we inhabit. I am fascinated by interiors and what we can’t see behind the masks of architecture, and faces. I am interested in conveying emotion through gesture and movement.

Studio Description:

100 year old three level barn with treacherous stairs, three electric kilns and one 2nd generation Shimpo wheel. The 40 year old Washburn front loader still my favorite kiln.

What type of clay do you use?

Miller 200 and S105.

What temperature do you fire to?

04.

What is your primary forming method?

Hand building.

What is your favorite surface treatment?

Bas Relief/Carving.

Do you make any of your own tools?

No but I improvise.

What one word would you use to describe your work?

Evocative.

What is your favorite thing about your studio?

Peaceful and personal.

What is the one thing in your studio you can’t live without?

The clay.

What are your top three studio wishes?

A pug mill Someone to wedge clay Someone to lift the heavy stuff.

How do you save money on materials and supplies?

I recycle as much as possible.

How do you recharge creatively?

I read the newspaper and get angry.

Do you have any DIY tips for studio efficiency?

No.

What did you first piece look like?

I still have it, a 12" blue coiled pitcher.

What is your studio playlist?

NPR.

If you could change one property of clay, what would it be?

Make it Unbreakable.
