Emerging Artist 2002
Martina Lantin’s pitchers, 36 in. (91 cm) in height, wood-fired stoneware. Inspired by both bold Scandinavian design as well as English medieval practicality, Lantin began her work in clay by handbuilding sculpture. “Since college, however, I have concentrated on the opposite end: throwing production standard utilitarian ware. The discipline required to produce such numbers of uniform pots has caused me to focus on the nature of craftsmanship. I now appreciate the value of discipline and what it means to be a craftsperson. To treat each pot, though it appears like the others, as an individual and as a reflection of the maker, is an important step in increasing the quality of work produced.”
