Add 1/4 cup barium carbonate per 100-pound batch to prevent scumming. I do not put this in my own clay. Instead, I use Amaco underglazes for surface development ad find that they do a good job of covering up any scumming that might happen.

This is the clay body used by the introductory class at the University of Kansas and was likely adapted from an earlier recipe from Alfred University.
