For my White Sigillata Base I use XX Saggar clay, and for my Red Sigillata Base I use Carbondale Red clay.

Combine sodium silicate with water and mix for around 1 minute.  Then, combine clay with the water/sodium silicate mixture and mix for 2 minutes. Let the mixture sit for around 96 hours (at least 72). Siphon off water and terra sigillata layer, leaving the thick clay sludge at the bottom of the container. Discard sludge. Add terra sigillata to a cooking pot and slowly simmer on a burner until you reach a specific gravity of about 1.12 to 1.15.
